What are the different types of groups?

There are currently 10 different types of Te Rito Groups, each with features specific to their function.

Regular Group, Club and Team

These groups have the same functionality and contain the standard group features to help clubs and teams work, learn and play together.

Professional Learning Community

A Professional Learning Community group contains a Course Planner to allow teachers to interact and collaborate.

  • Course Plans can be collaborated on, shared with, and copy and pasted from by all members of the group
  • To enter the Planner, click Planner in the top right corner of the group

Badge

A Badge group awards and tracks certifications and badges for staff and students.

  • Badges are displayed in the Badges panel located on the left side of the home screen
  • Use badge categories to distinguish teachers’ certifications and other credentials
  • Can be defined for and used to reward students
  • Granted to a person by a badge moderator or multiple moderators
  • Automated membership can be used to ensure the right people are automatically granted the right badges
  • Can be created at school or region-level
  • Badge groups can have an open membership to allow members to collaborate and engage on the topic even after being awarded the badge
  • To enter the group, click the name of the badge in the panel or the group name in the My Groups panel

List Group

A List group helps schools create lists of people.

  • Private by default
  • Used for performing various actions on a set of students
  • Students can be included in the group without knowing they belong to the group
  • Can be used for attendance or for mail list-type purposes, such as making a planned absence for all Year 8 students, or messaging a specific group of parents
  • Can be used to group students for disciplinary or other reasons

Archived

Changing the group type to Archived will remove it from the home screen of moderators and members.

Study Group

A Study Group is a group automatically created by Te Rito containing all teachers and students in a region teaching or taking the same course.

  • Te Rito automatically creates study groups for each unique course being offered in a given region
  • Enables students throughout the region to ask questions, learn from other students, and be guided by educators facilitating the learning in that specific area
  • Can also be created manually by staff to facilitate smaller study groups

Professional Development Group

A Professional Development Group is a class for teachers, or anyone. It contains a Content Builder in place of a Knowledge Base to support content delivery.

  • Moderators are content creators and facilitators
  • Members are participants
  • Can be made both school and region-wide
  • Only moderators of a group can edit or add to the Course Content using the Content Builder
  • To edit or add to the Course Content as a moderator, click on the Content panel. Click Edit in the top of the left panel to open the Content Builder. Add units, sections, assessments, pages, links, discussions, polls, and files to the course by clicking the + next to an item of content

  • Content from the group can be copied to Classes, Learning Object Repositories, or the Personal Course of teachers from the Content Builder

Read more about the Content Builder here

Learning Object Repository

Learning Object Repositories (LORs) help content creators store, categorise and share learning objects. Learning objects are digital resources that support learning and can be re-used, such as quizzes and presentations.

  • A LOR serves as a container where learning objects are collected
  • Content created in Te Rito Groups, Classes, and your Personal Folder can be copied and pasted into the LOR to share with other teachers. Read more about this here
  • Can be school or region-wide eg., a LOR for all geography teachers in a region allows them to share their best videos, quizzes, and other materials
  • LORs do not contain a group calendar or knowledge base.
  • When a Learning Object is contributed, anyone who enters the group has access to it.
  • Teachers can search and filter for content using the Search bar and filters on the left of the group

  • Teachers can copy any Learning Objects from LORs into their own Te Rito Classes or Professional Development Groups by clicking Copy to the right of the object. Read more about copying and pasting within Te Rito here
  • To contribute a Learning Object to the LOR, click Add Learning Object at the top right of the LOR. Fill out the form, add any attachments, and click Save
