Step 1 – Setting up users
1. To be able to log in and start using Te Rito:-
- Your school’s SMS must first be connected to Te Rito. You can register at Connect your SMS to Te Rito
- School staff must have an active ESL account to access Te Rito.
- In ESL, the principal, deputy principal and teacher roles were pre-assigned to all school staff as at 10 June 2025.
- If there are staff members you do not wish to have access, your Delegated Authoriser (DA) must remove their Te Rito role in ESL.
- For staff accounts to appear in Te Rito, their First Name, Last Name and email address must be in your SMS.
If you need to edit staff details in your SMS, allow a day after doing this before re-attempting the account activation process. This is because Te Rito syncs with your SMS every 24 hours which is when any new information will be captured.
2. Staff can log in to ESL's Self Service to check that they have a Te Rito role:

3. If you have any new staff at your school after 10 June 2025 who you wish to have access, your DA will need to assign a Te Rito role to them in ESL.
4. When staff leave your school, your DA must ensure their Te Rito role is removed from them in ESL.
Step 2 – Activating accounts
- To access Te Rito:
- Click the below link to initiate the account activation process in ESL: Activate my account
- Log in to your ESL account.

- You will be redirected to Te Rito’s ‘Activate your Edsby Account’ screen.
Enter the email address you use to log in to your SMS. Make sure you enter it correctly, as this is where your user invitation will be sent.

Click ‘Generate Invitation’

You should receive an email from ‘noreply@access.terito.govt.nz’. If you don’t receive it, check your spam or junk folder in case it’s gone there.

Open the email and click the link to start using Te Rito

- You will be prompted to read and accept Te Rito’s Terms of Use.
If you agree, click ‘Accept’ to complete the activation process.
